LIVE AT FIREFLY: The ‘Suite’ Sounds of Ellington

As one of the most influential figures in jazz, Duke Ellington created a distinctive big band sound, continuing to play what he called “American music” until shortly before his death in 1974. In the words of Ellington, “music is how I live, why I live and how I will be remembered.” Throughout his 50-year career, Ellington wrote a few long-form multi-movement works, using the suite format to give his jazz a more empowering meaning, resonance and purpose. On March 25, 2022, your Charleston Jazz Orchestra will showcase two memorable, vital and innovative suites from Ellington’s late career – The New Orleans Suite and The Far East Suite. Join your CJO for an evening at Firefly Distillery dedicated to one of the major creative forces in the music of the twentieth century.
