About This Show

Factory Theatre presents the second year of its highly successful CrossCurrents Festival. This annual new play festival is devoted to showcasing and developing work by writers of colour, whose themes involve the intersections of different cultures. The readings include:

Tiger of Malaya by Hiro Kanagawa on April 19 at 8pm
This is the story of Japanese General Yamashita, accused of atrocities in the Philippines during World War II, and the American Defense Attorney who is appointed to defend him at his war crimes trial.

In a World Created by a Drunken God by Drew Hayden Taylor on April 23 at 8pm
As he prepares to move out of his apartment, half-Native Justin has a visitor: the white brother he never knew he had appears with the news that their father is dying and Justin may be the only compatible donor for a kidney transplant. A comedy about giving too little and being asked to give too much.

The Refugee Hotel by Carmen Aguirre on April 25 at 8pm
Set in 1973, this lyrical and poetic play explores the resilience and fragility of the human spirit as Chilean refugees try (and sometimes fail) to adjust to a new life in an unfamiliar land called Canada.

The Unnatural and Accidental Women by Marie Clements on April 26 at 8pm
Rebecca sets out on a journey to find the truth about the deaths of ten native women in East Vancouver’s ‘skid row’, and in doing so refute the official reports that their deaths were ‘unnatural and accidental’. A bold and beautiful work from one of Canada’s bravest new voices.

In addition to the four public readings, CrossCurrents includes a public forum on April 21, Does Art Have A Colour or Gender? This public round table invites discussion with Toronto writers and directors on issues of race and gender in the creation and production of theatre. Playwrights Guild of Canada Reception at 7pm. Forum begins at 8pm. This event is free.
