Boy Gets Girl

In Rebecca Gilman’s Boy Gets Girl, we meet Theresa Bedell, a reporter for a New York magazine, who goes on a blind date with Tony, a software trainer. Theresa doesn’t think they have much in common, so after their second date, she lets him down gently with the old “it’s not you, it’s me” story. Tony is not easily discouraged, though, and amidst a barrage of phone calls and flower deliveries, Theresa thinks there may be something to worry about. Theresa’s co-workers think Tony just can’t take a hint, while her secretary, Harriet, judges Theresa for rejecting him too coldly and feels sorry for Tony. As the evening progresses, Theresa’s paranoia turns inward, and she begins to doubt everything she sees.
