New York City
Northcoast Repertory Theatre presents the San Diego premiere of Carlyle Brown’s powerful play, The African Company Presents Richard III. It is 1821, 40 years before Lincoln ended slavery, and 50 years before black Americans earned the right to vote. The play revolves around the true story of the first black theatrical group in the country, the African Company of New York, which staged shows in a downtown Manhattan Theatre, selling out to both black and white audiences. Conflicts arise when an uptown Broadway impresario produces Richard III at the same time as the African Company’s production. Joe Powers directs.
$10 rush tickets are sold 10 minutes prior to performance. Subject to availability.
