Cimarosa, like Mozart, understood how to write music that emanates lightness, clarity and humor. He polished his skills in his favorite medium, opera buffa, the highest form of 18th-century musical comedy. The overture on this program is typical of Cimarosa’s clear and witty writing, weaving affectionate melodic lines into transparently orchestrated textures. Tonight’s version of this overture was edited by Maestro Porat from original source materials kept at the San Pietro a Maiella Music Conservatory Library in Napoli, Italy.
