Written by Cuban-born Nilo Cruz, Anna in the Tropics, winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, explores the life-changing powers of literature among the workers in a Cuban-American cigar factory in 1920s Florida. To reduce the tedium as they roll cigars, the employees are read Anna Karenina by a handsome “lector.” Karenina’s passions ignite yearning and betrayal among the workers mirroring the novel’s tragic events.
The show transfers to the Solvang Festival Theater and plays July 21-August 6, 2006 as well.
