The estate of Ernest Hemingway has provided Stoneham Theatre with the rights to adapt one of his most beloved novels for the stage.
The Old Man and the Sea, which received both a Pulitzer and Nobel Prize for Literature, is a beautiful story that tells the universal tale of humanity’s ever-changing relationship with nature. Over the past fifty years, Hemingway’s stories have been translated into over one hundred different languages and have been enjoyed by millions of people around the globe.
“I’m drawn to the dramatic simplicity of it the simplicity of one man versus nature” says Stoneham Theatre Artistic Director Weylin Symes, who will adapt Hemingway’s tale for the stage. “It’s that aspect of the story that makes it compelling, and it’s also what makes it a challenge. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to introduce our audiences to one of America’s greatest writers in an unexpected way.”
