National Yiddish Theater — Folksbiene to Pay Tribute to Fiddler on the Roof's Theodore Bikel
The one-night-only event will be held in anticipation of the actor's 90th birthday.
Next month The National Yiddish Theater — Folksbiene will pay tribute to the two-time Tony Award nominee Theodore Bikel (Fiddler on the Roof) in anticipation of his 90th birthday, in May 2014. The event, Miracle of Miracles: A Chanukah Extravaganza, will take place on Monday, December 2, at Symphony Space.
Bikel will make a special appearance with the Frank London-led Folksbiene Klezmorim Orchestra. The concert will also feature Emmy winner Fyvush Finkel (Picket Fences), Psoy Korolenko, and Broadway performers Joanne Borts (Once) and Elmore James. Soloists include Magda Fishman, Avi Fox-Rosen, Avram Pengas, and Rachel Yucht. More performers will be announced at a later date.
Bikel received a Tony Award nomination for his performance in The Rope Dancer in 1958. Bikel also originated the role of Captain Georg von Trapp in the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music, for which he received a second Tony Award nomination. In addition, Bikel earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in The Defiant Ones. Since 1967, he has performed the role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof over 2,000 times, both on Broadway and on tour.
The evening was conceived by Zalmen Mlotek.
