Emma Stone Is Officially Going to Play Sally Bowles in Cabaret on Broadway

The announcement comes hot on the heels of the spring 2013 announcement to the contrary. logo
Emma Stone will star as Sally Bowles in the current Broadway revival of Cabaret.

Despite the fact that Emma Stone was one of only two actresses who went to the trouble of announcing that they would definitely not be starring in a Broadway revival of Cabaret, Emma Stone has officially been announced as the new lead in the current Broadway revival of Cabaret. Beginning November 11, Stone will replace Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams in the role of British chanteuse Sally Bowles. Stone is currently scheduled to stay with the production through February 1.

Although 2013's Cabaret announcement was woefully inaccurate regarding Stone's "non-casting," it did get several points right. For instance, the then-unannounced revival did open on Broadway in 2014, and Alan Cumming, who received a Tony Award for his work as the Emcee in Roundabout's 1998 revival, did return to that role. The production at Studio 54 also currently stars Danny Burstein and Linda Emond along with Williams.

Featuring a book by Joe Masteroff and a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb, Cabaret is based on Christopher Isherwood's stories as well as on John Van Druten's drama I Am a Camera. The production, a remounting of Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall's Tony-winning revival, will now run until March 29 with Alan Cumming confirmed to extend his performance through that date.

As far as we know, Anne Hathaway, the only other actress who was officially announced not to be starring in the production, is still sticking to her word. But at this point, it looks like almost any talented young starlet who once played the romantic interest in a comic book movie could take over. We're just not sure whom to trust.
