Caissie Levy, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Will Swenson, John Ellison Conlee to Sing a Murder Ballad Off-Broadway
The acclaimed musical, which recently played a sold-out run at Manhattan Theatre Club, will transfer to the Union Square Theatre in May.
Caissie Levy (Ghost), Rebecca Naomi Jones (American Idiot), and Tony Award nominees Will Swenson (It's a Bird… It's a Plane… It's Superman), and John Ellison Conlee (The Madrid) will star in an upcoming off-Broadway transfer of Julia Jordan and Juliana Nash's Lucille Lortel Award-nominated rock musical Murder Ballad. Drama Desk Award nominee Trip Cullman (Lonely, I'm Not), who helmed the show's recent sold-out engagement at Manhattan Theatre Club's Studio at Stage II, will repeat his work at the Union Square Theatre. Previews will begin on May 7 in advance of a May 22 opening. The nine-week engagement will conclude on July 7.
The five-time Lucille Lortel Award-nominated musical focuses on Sara (Levy), an Upper West Side mom caught between a future with her family and her dangerous downtown past. Conlee, Swenson, and Jones repeat their roles of Sara's husband Michael, Sara's former boyfriend Tom, and the Narrator, which they originated at Manhattan Theatre Club in the winter of 2012. The role of Sara was played by Karen Olivo in the Manhattan Theatre Club mounting.
Murder Ballad is conceived by Jonathan Larson Award winner and two-time Susan Smith Blackburn Prize finalist Jordan, who wrote the book and lyrics, and features music and additional lyrics by indie rock singer/songwriter Nash. The creative team includes Mark Wendland (scenic design), Jessica Pabst (costume design), Ben Stanton (lighting design), Leon Rothenberg (sound design), Doug Varone (choreography), and Justin Levine (music direction, vocal arrangement, and orchestrations).
An original cast recording of the musical will be released on the Yellow Sound Label in the coming weeks.
