For Colored Girls… to Become Feature Film

A film version of Ntozake Shange’s 1975 stage play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf will be produced by Lionsgate and written and directed by Nzingha Stewart, according to Variety.

A revival of the play, which is a series of 20 poems, touching on stories of love, abandonment, domestic abuse and other issues faced by black women, was originally scheduled to open on Broadway this season, but financing fell through.

The play was previously made into a 1982 television movie with Shange, Laurie Carlos, Trazana Beverly, Alfre Woodard, and Lynn Whitfield.
