The New York Drama Critics’ Circle has named Alan Bennett’s The History Boys as Best Play and The Drowsy Chaperone as Best Musical of the 2005-2006 season.

The selections were made at the 70th annual voting meeting of the organization today at the offices of Time Out New York. Adam Feldman, a theater editor at the magazine, is the president of the group, which comprises 19 drama critics from daily newspapers, magazines, and wire services based in the New York metropolitan area.

The NYDCC also made history by awarding two special citations in one season: One went to director John Doyle, musical director Sarah Travis, and the company of the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd; the other went to Christine Ebersole for her performance in the musical Grey Gardens, which was seen earlier this year at Playwrights Horizons.

The awards will be presented at a cocktail reception to be held on Tuesday, May 23 at the Algonquin Hotel. The Best Play award includes a cash prize of $2,500, made possible in part by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation.
