The Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Once celebrated its one-year-anniversary on the Great White Way with cake and a post-matinee jam session on Wednesday, March 20. Tony Award nominee Cristin Milioti and cast member Ben Hope surprised the audience and led the company of the acclaimed musical in a special performance of the title song, which was cut from the musical during its off-Broadway run at New York Theatre Workshop, and then unveiled a beautiful commemorative cake designed by The Chocolate Swirl.
Inspired by the acclaimed independent film of the same title, Once won eight 2012 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. The musical features a book by award-winning Irish playwright and screenwriter Enda Walsh (Penelope), Academy Award-winning music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, direction by the John Tiffany (Black Watch), movement by Steven Hoggett (American Idiot) and music supervision and orchestrations by Martin Lowe (Mamma Mia!).
Once stars Milioti and 2012 Tony Award winner Steve Kazee (who is currently on vocal rest), along with Tony Award nominee Elizabeth A. Davis and Will Connolly, will depart the production on Sunday, March 24, to be replaced by Ben Hope, Laura Dreyfuss, Carlos Valdez, and Claire Wellin. The company also currently includes David Abeles, David Patrick Kelly, Jillian Lebling, Eliza Holland Madore, Anne L. Nathan, Lucas Papaelias, Andy Taylor, Carlos Valdes, Erikka Walsh, Claire Wellin, Paul Whitty, and J. Michael Zygo.
