Casting has been announced for the special-engagement run of the Tony Award-nominated The Scottsboro Boys at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. The Scottsboro Boys is based on the infamous Scottsboro case in the 1930s during a shocking chapter in American history. It tells the tale of the nine unjustly accused African-American men whose stories would eventually lead to the civil rights movement.
The cast features Gilbert L. Bailey II (The Tenth Floor), David Bazemore (Food Confessions), Ayanna Berkshire (Race), Shavey Brown (The Scottsboro Boys), Christopher James Culberson (The Scottsboro Boys), Joshua Henry (The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess), Trent Armand Kendall (Hair), Max Kumangai (Lysistrata Jones), Hal Linden (Cabaret), JC Montgomery (Bye Bye Birdie), Justin Prescott (Fela!), Clinton Roane (The Scottsboro Boys), Cedric Sanders (Matter of Honor), C. Kelly Wright (A Little Princess), Christian Dante White (The Scottsboro Boys), and the young Deandre Sevon.
Five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman (The Producers) reprises her direction and choreography for this production of the musical. This special engagement of The Scottsboro Boys has set design by Beowulf Boritt (Grace), costume design by Toni-Leslie James (Lucky Guy), lighting design by Ken Billington (Chaplin), and sound design by Jon Weston (13), with Evangeline Rose Whitlock as the production stage manager.
The Scottsboro Boys had its world premiere at New York's Vineyard Theatre in February of 2010 and was presented on Broadway in October through December 2010. The Scottsboro Boys received twelve 2011 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. The show features music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb (Chicago) and a book by David Thompson (Steel Pier).
Previews for the Center Theatre Group production begin on May 21 with an opening night set for May 29. Performances run through June 20.
