Lucia’s Chapters of Coming Forth by Day

About This Show

Lucia’s Chapters of Coming Forth by Day explores Lucia Joyce’s life and after-life. As a young woman in Paris, her world was filled with writers, artists and intellectuals. She was a dancer and a painter. Her father believed Lucia to be the true inheritor of his genius. While still in her twenties, her behavior grew erratic. Admitted to a mental hospital at age 27, Lucia spent the next fifty years in confinement, until her death in 1982.

This theatrical ode on her life is a multi-layered production using an episodic or chapter structure modeled on the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The script traverses Lucia’s institutional
life, her father’s celebrity, her struggle with illness, and the playful dream world of her father’s creation where her reflection brings insight and clarity to an otherwise tragic and mysterious life.
