About This Show

Kalighat, a new play by Paul Knox, with choreography by Myna Mukherjee, is a full-length, environmental piece, set in Mother Teresa’s first home for the dying in Calcutta. With a cast of 26 actors, Kalighat explores issues of disparity, terminal poverty, death & dying and personal responsibility as it seeks to build a bridge of understanding between cultures. Kalighat seeks to recreate an important historical place, and bring to life the actual work of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, elaborated with neither ornament nor judgment. Kalighat merges the traditional Euro-American realistic theater styles and sociopolitical and spiritual/religious perspectives with the traditional ones of South Asia. The essence of the South Asian experience emerges thru the South Asian characters as the journey of the Western characters deepens.
