UPDATED —Emmy Award winner Debra Messing (Smash) will join David Hyde Pierce as cohost of the Drama League Awards on Friday, May 17 at the Marriot Marquis Times Square.

UPDATED —Tony and Emmy Award winner David Hyde Pierce (currently of Broadway's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike) will host the 79th Annual Drama League Awards, held Friday, May 17 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square. Joining Hyde Pierce will be Grammy Award-winning Kinky Boots composer/lyricist Cyndi Lauper and Emmy Award winner Mary Tyler Moore, who will present previously announced special awards to Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots), and Tony, Drama Desk, and Grammy Award winner Bernadette Peters (Follies), respectively.

Honorary cochairs for the Awards luncheon include Bobby Cannavale (The Big Knife), Alan Cumming (Macbeth), Edie Falco (The Madrid), Judith Ivey (The Heiress), Nathan Lane (The Nance), Judith Light (The Assembled Parties), Patina Miller (Pippin), Donna Murphy (Into the Woods), Fiona Shaw (The Testament of Mary), Holland Taylor (Ann), Cicely Tyson (The Trip to Bountiful), and Michael Urie (Buyer & Cellar).

March 21—Tony Award winners Bernadette Peters (Follies) and Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots) will be honored by the Drama League this spring at the 79th Annual Drama League Awards, set for May 17 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square.

Peters, who won Tonys for her performances in Song and Dance and Annie Get Your Gun, as well as the 2012 Isabelle Stevenson Award, will receive the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre Award for her contribution to the field. Mitchell, who won a Tony for his choreography in the 2004 revival of La Cage aux Folles, will receive the Founders Award for Excellence in Directing. He has served as director of the Broadway productions of Legally Blonde and Kinky Boots. Additionally, Madison Square Garden Entertainment and the Rockettes will receive the Unique Contribution to the Theatre Award for their efforts to promote live theater.

These honors will be presented alongside the winners of the Distinguished Play, Distinguished Revival of a Play, Distinguished Musical, Distinguished Revival of a Musical, and the Distinguished Performance Awards at the May 17 ceremony, which takes into consideration the productions of the 2012-2013 Broadway season. The 2013 Drama League nominees will be announced on April 23 at Sardi's.

First presented in 1922, the Drama League Awards are the only major theater awards in the U.S. chosen by audience members, specifically the nationwide membership of the Drama League who attend Broadway and off-Broadway productions. Past honorees for the coveted Distinguished Performance Award include Audra McDonald, Liam Neeson, Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, James Earl Jones, Julie Harris, Katharine Cornell, and Christopher Plummer.
