Michael Cera, best known for his awkward adolescent film characters and longtime role as George Michael Bluth on the hit comedy series Arrested Development, will make his Broadway and New York stage debut this summer in a Steppenwolf Theatre Company production of Kenneth Lonergan's This Is Our Youth.
Cera will perform opposite Obie winner Kieran Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Starry Messenger) and Tavi Gevinson (Enough Said) in her stage debut. The production will premiere at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago this June before beginning a 20-week limited engagement at Broadway's Cort Theatre.
Performances will begin at the Cort on August 18 in advance of a September 11 opening and will run through January 4, 2015. Anna D. Shapiro will direct, returning to Steppenwolf for the first time since helming the company's Tony-winning production of August: Osage County. The Chicago run will begin performances June 10 in advance of a June 18 opening and run through July 27.
Set in New York in 1982, This Is Our Youth follows three lost souls over the course of 48 hours. Cera will play Warren, a dejected 19-year-old who has just stolen $15,000 from his abusive father. Culkin will play his drug-dealing friend, Dennis, who helps him put the money to good use, and Gevinson will take on the role of Warren's love interest, Jessica.
The play is described as "a living snapshot of the moment when many young people go out into the world on their own, armed only with the ideas and techniques they developed as teenagers – far more sophisticated than their parents realize, and far less effectual than they themselves can possibly imagine."
This Is Our Youth premiered off-Broadway in 1996 at the INTAR Theatre. Culkin later took on the role of Warren in a West End production of the play in 2003, and in 2012 he joined the play again to perform the role of Dennis in a production at Sydney Opera House.
The production's creative team will feature scenic design by Todd Rosenthal, costume design by Ann Roth, lighting design by Brian MacDevitt, sound design by Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen, and original music by Grammy winner Rostam Batmanglij.
