Something smells funky…and it's heading towards Broadway.

An Equity casting notice broke news of plans for another workshop for the new soul-funk musical, Super Fly, based on the 1972 film made famous by its soundtrack by Grammy Hall of Famer Curtis Mayfield. Directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones (Fela!), the musical has already conducted several workshops, the first of which was held in March 2012. The upcoming summer workshop, presented by Tommy Mottola, The Mottola Media Group, and The Dodgers, is scheduled to be held from June-August in New York City. Producers have expressed a desire to bring the musical to Broadway but no official plans have been announced.

The story of Super Fly follows a man named Priest (aka Super Fly), who tries to end his career as a Harlem drug dealer to start a new life with his pregnant girlfriend, Georgia. His efforts, however, are thwarted by an associate who wants to keep him in the trade.

Tony Award nominee Rick Elice (Peter and the Starcatcher) has joined the creative team as the book's co-author, alongside previously reported Seth Zvi Rosenfeld (Handball). In addition to utilizing the music that Curtis Mayfield lent to the original film, the show plans to incorporate other songs of 1970s R&B, soul, funk, and the pop era. Musical direction will be provided by Ron Melrose (Jersey Boys). Needless to say, if the production does ever make it to Broadway, it promises to be Super Fly, indeed.
