John Doyle, best known for his minimalist direction of Stephen Sondheim musicals including the Broadway productions of Company and Sweeney Todd (for which he won a Tony Award), as well as Classic Stage Company's current production of Passion, will join CSC next season as an associate director. He plans to develop his own projects and will consult with Artistic Director Brian Kulick in planning the season. Doyle will also offer leadership for the company's new musical theater initiative, of which Passion was the inaugural production.

CSC's creative mission is to reimagine classical works for contemporary American audiences. In its 45-year history, it has garnered a reputation as one of New York's premiere off-Broadway theater companies and has accrued an impressive collective of Obie, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, and Lucille Lortel Awards.

"I think I can speak for everyone [who] has ever worked with John when I say the encounter is both intoxicating and life-altering," said Kulick in a statement. "It is a great joy for all of us at CSC to be able to continue this special relationship with John on a more formal, ongoing basis."

Doyle said, "I am thrilled to have been invited by Classic Stage Company to become an associate director with the company. Directing Passion at this wonderful venue was a true pleasure and it is so exciting to have the opportunity to make an ongoing input into the work of CSC. I look forward to spending some time each season with Brian Kulick and his terrific staff."
