Carrie Fisher, Chris Rock, and More Celebrate Fiona Shaw and Broadway's The Testament of Mary

Religious protestors didn't stop the opening night performance of this new drama.

By New York City

Religious protesters singing "Ave Maria" and chanting "Our Father" outside the Walter Kerr Theatre didn't stop Broadway's The Testament of Mary from celebrating its opening night on Monday, April 22. Following the performance, star Fiona Shaw, author Colm Tóibín, director Deborah Warner, and their guests headed to famed theater-district eatery Sardi's for an old-fashioned opening night party.

Based on Tóibín's novella of the same name, The Testament of Mary explores the story of the Virgin Mary, mother to Jesus Christ, from the point of view of a woman grieving the death of her son. Scott Rudin produces the drama's Broadway premiere, which features production designs by Tom Pye, Ann Roth, Jennifer Tipton, and Mel Mercier.

Guests included Chris Rock, Salman Rushdie, Carrie Fisher, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita, Annabella Sciorra, Martha Plimpton, and Elizabeth Rodriguez.
