Laura Benanti, the Tony- and two-time Drama Desk Award-winning star of Gypsy and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, will host the 59th Annual Drama Desk Awards on Sunday, June 1, at The Town Hall, TheaterMania CEO Gretchen Shugart and Drama Desk President Isa Goldberg have announced.
"I am thrilled to bring my particular brand of idiocy to what is usually a very classy affair. #ForThePeopleByThePeople," Benanti said in a statement.
"As host, Laura Benanti brings a winning combination to the stage — talent, beauty, and a great sense of humor," Shugart said. "We look forward to a great evening."
Benanti's many Broadway credits also include Nine, The Sound of Music, Into the Woods, Swing!, The Wedding Singer, and In the Next Room (or the vibrator play). On television, she has been seen in Go On, The Playboy Club, Starved, and The Sound of Music Live! Benanti has also appeared on TheaterMania in the video series "Laura Benanti Explains Shakespeare."
TheaterMania will present the awards ceremony for the third consecutive year, with Joey Parnes Productions producing and managing. Jack Cummings III directs the ceremony, which will be written by Bill Rosenfield.
The Drama Desk Awards nominations announcement news conference will take place on Friday, April 25, at 11am at 54 Below. It will be live-streamed on TheaterMania.
