First Date, a new, real-time musical comedy about a pair of strangers embarking on a blind date, will make its Broadway debut this summer, beginning July 9 at the Longacre Theatre in anticipation of an August 4 opening. Bill Berry, the producing director of Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre, helms the work, which premiered at 5th Avenue in March, 2012.
With a score by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner (the team behind the upcoming musical Secondhand Lions), and a book by Gossip Girl scribe Austin Winsberg, First Date explores the initial dinner between Aaron, a neurotic Jewish investment banker, and Casey, a would-be artist, from drinks to Google background checks to fake emergency phone calls. But will the mismatched pair actually make a connection?
The creative team includes Josh Rhodes (choreography), Dominick Amendum (musical supervision, vocal, and incidental arrangements), August Eriksmoen (orchestrations), David Gallo (scenic design), David Woolard (costume design), Mike Baldassari (lighting design), and Kai Harada (sound design). First Date is produced by Junkyard Dog Productions, in association with Stem Productions, Susan W. and James C. Blair Family LP, Alex and Katya Lukianov, and Linda and Bill Potter.
Casting for the show's Broadway bow will be announced in the future. At the 5th Avenue Theatre, the production starred Eric Ankrim and Kelly Karbacz as Aaron and Casey, with Greg McCormick Allen, Richard Gray, Benjamin Harris, Vicki Noon, Brandon O'Neill, and Billie Wildrick in various roles.
