The new stage musical adaptations of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the musical tale Ever After are among the productions that will take the stage at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse during their 2014-2015 season.
Presented in a coproduction with San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse and produced by special arrangement with Disney Theatrical Productions, The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be presented from March 4-April 5, 2015. The score, featured in the 1996 Disney film of the same title, is written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, with a new book by Peter Parnell that tells the story of deformed bell ringer Quasimodo and his desire to escape from the confines of his cathedral after meeting the beautiful gypsy Esmerelda and the dashing Captain Phoebus. Scott Schwartz directs the musical, with choreography by Josh Bergasse.
With a book and lyrics by Marcy Heisler and music by Zina Goldrich, Ever After will be directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, with musical direction by Mary-Mitchell Campbell. Inspired by the film of the same title, the show tells the story of Danielle de Barbarac, the daughter of a French nobleman who embarks on a series of adventures that includes standing up to her stepmother, befriending Leonardo da Vinci, and winning the affection of the prince of France. Ever After will run from May 21-June 21, 2015.
Joel Fields and David Lee's revised version of the classic Cole Porter-Abe Burrows musical Can-Can will open the season, running from October 1-October 26, 2014. Set in the 1890s, the show follows the conflict between La Mome Pistache, a café owner in 1890s Montmartre, and the pious judge Aristide Forestier, who butt heads when he learns that she has a risqué but increasingly popular can-can dance at her club. Lee also directs the production, which features choreography by Patti Colombo.
Elf, the Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar holiday musical based on the film of the same title, will be the Paper Mill's holiday musical, running from November 26-January 4. Christopher Durang's Tony-winning comedy, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, will follow, from January 21-February 15.
