Michael Price, executive director of East Haddam, Connecticut's nationally renowned Goodspeed Musicals, personally reached out to a group of theater students from Trumbull High School, offering them a venue for their spring production of Rent: The School Edition. As previously reported, the production had been canceled by Principal Marc Guarino for its content. Since the musical's cancellation, Trumbull's Thespian Society, led by President Larissa Mark, launched a "Trumbull for Rent" campaign, lobbying for the musical to be allowed on the school's stage this spring.

The student efforts have clearly paid off, for they no longer need an in-school green light to mount the groundbreaking musical. "It breaks my heart to know that just as musical theater is gaining popularity with young people, such a passionate group of students may be prevented from sharing their message with the community," remarked Price. "Goodspeed stands in strong support of the students' efforts to do challenging work at their high school, and, if that's not possible, we'd be honored to offer a platform to lift their voices in Jonathan Larson's moving and classic songs, which deserve to be sung by the very young people he was writing about and for."
