Works by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ayad Akhtar, and More Set for Olney Theatre Season
Classics by Thornton Wilder and Arthur Miller are also on the docket.
The Olney Theatre Center has announced the lineup of productions set for its 2017-18 season.
Opening the season will be a Round House Theatre coproduction of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes' In the Heights (September 6-October 8), starring two-time Tony nominee Robin De Jesús. Marcos Santana directs and choreographs.
Thornton Wilder's Our Town (October 4-November 12) will follow. Directed by Aaron Posner, Jon Hudson Odom will star as the Stage Manager and Bunraku-style puppets as the citizens of Grovers Corners.
Following will be two political thrillers. Arthur Miller's classic The Crucible (April 18-May 20) will be directed by artistic associate Eleanor Holdridge on the Mainstage. Then, Michael Bloom will helm Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar's Invisible Hand (May 9-June 10).
In the summer, artistic director Jason Loewith will direct a revival of On the Town (June 20-July 22), Comden and Green's first hit, with music by a young Leonard Bernstein inspired by Jerome Robbins. Set to star are Donna Migliaccio, Bobby Smith, Rachel Zampelli, Tracy Lynn Olivera, and Evan Casey.
For the holiday season, Paul Morella's critically acclaimed one-man A Christmas Carol will return for its eighth season at the theater. In addition, Chicago's Hypocrites will return to the Lab with The Pirates of Penzance and H.M.S. Pinafore (July 11-August 19) directed in rep by Sean Graney.
Olney will also offer a 3-Play Theater for Young Audiences series featuring Theatreworks USA's Click, Clack, Moo and Dragons Love Tacos as well as Virginia Rep on Tour's The Ugly Duckling.
Rounding out the season will be National Players' Tour 69 productions of The Great Gatsby, Othello, and a new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, directed and adapted by D.C.'s Natsu Onada Power.
