Kathleen Turner Celebrates Opening Night of Mother Courage and Her Children at Arena Stage

Performances of the Bertolt Brecht epic will run at the D.C. theater through March 9.

On February 6, Washington, D.C.'s Arena Stage celebrated the official opening of Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children, starring two-time Tony nominee Kathleen Turner in the title role.

Written in 1939, Mother Courage and Her Children is one of nine plays that Brecht penned to protest the rise of Fascism and Nazism. The play follows Mother Courage and her three children (Eilif, Kattrin, and Swiss Cheese) over the course of 12 years, depicted in 12 scenes, during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648).

Arena Stage Artistic Director Molly Smith directs a cast featuring Nehal Joshi as youngest son Swiss Cheese, Nicholas Rodriguez as eldest son Eilif, and Erin Weaver in her Arena Stage debut as daughter Kattrin. The cast also includes Rick Foucheux as The Chaplain, Meg Gillentine as Yvette, and Broadway alum Jack Willis as The Cook.

Performances run through March 9. Take a look at the cast and creative team on opening night.
