Legendary theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh will receive Signature Theatre's annual Stephen Sondheim Award, presented at a ceremony at the Embassy of Italy on March 20. The Sondheim Award Gala benefits the Virginia-based theater's artistic, education, and community programs.

The Stephen Sondheim Award was created in 2010 to recognize the importance of Sondheim's work to Signature and to theater in general. Past recipients include Sondheim musical veterans Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, director Harold Prince, and orchestrator Jonathan Tunick.

Mackintosh has produced the three longest-running musicals in history: Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, and Cats. His new production of Miss Saigon opens on Broadway in March 2017, while his new version of Half A Sixpence recently opened in London. He is currently working on film versions of Oliver! and Miss Saigon following the hugely successful film of Les Misérables. He owns nine London theaters including the Victoria Palace, which after a major refurbishment, will re-open in October 2017 with the Award-winning musical, Hamilton, co-produced with Jeffrey Seller. Mackintosh was knighted in 1996 and recently elected to the Theater Hall of Fame.
