New Jerusalem: The Interrogation of Baruch de Spinoza at Talmud Torah Congregation: Amsterdam, July 27, 1656, by David Ives, will return to Theater J after its successful run in 2010, starting February 29 until April 1.

The play, which garnered a 2010 Helen Hayes nomination for Outstanding Resident Production, follows young philosopher Baruch de Spinoza (played by Alexander Strain, 2010 Helen Hayes Award nominee for this performance) as he faces excommunication from the Jewish community for his provocative, subversive new ideas. The conversation culminates in a stimulating, interactive “Spinozium” (Spinoza Symposium) where leading authors and scholars from around the country re-open the case against Spinoza and his accusers.

Joining Strain in the cast are Colleen Delany (Rebekah), Emma Jaster (Clara), Michael Kramer (Ben Israel), Brandon McCoy (Simon), Lawrence Redmond (Valkenburgh), and Michael Tolaydo (Rabbi Mortera).

New Jerusalem will again be directed by Jeremy Skidmore, and also brings back the work of the original design team with Misha Kachman (set design) Matt Nielson (sound design), and Thom Weaver (lighting design). Designing new costumes will be Kathleen Geldard and properties will be designed by HannaH J Crowell.
