Carrie Compere can currently be seen among the gospel choir featured in Jeremy O. Harris's new fantastical play, Daddy, running off-Broadway at the Pershing Square Signature Center. But not long ago she enjoyed an extended run on Broadway in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple, again singing gospel as one of the Church Ladies. There wasn't too much set to contend with — just a few chairs and some baskets. But if there's one thing she learned from a particularly rude audience member, it's this: Don't mess with a Church Lady's basket.
