Sara Bareilles and Gavin Creel Bring Real-Life Love to Broadway's Waitress
The show's newest pair of costars describe how to make two lovers of friends on Broadway.
Waitress's Tony-nominated composer Sara Bareilles is returning to the lead role of Jenna at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, and this time she's bringing the love of her life, Gavin Creel. Creel, who earned a 2017 Tony Award for his performance as Cornelius Hackl in the last revival of Hello, Dolly!, joins the company as Jenna's illicit love interest, Dr. Pomatter, performing opposite Bareilles through February 3. Aside from flawless voices, the pair bring a close friendship to the show, which they reflected upon at a recent press event at Sardi's restaurant. Creel has long enjoyed playing the Waitress ballad "You Matter to Me" on his piano, but now it has taken on a brand-new meaning.
