Mike Birbiglia and Martin Moran on Baring Souls and Sharing Secrets Onstage
The two solo performers discuss the inspiration for their work and what it's like to take the stage alone.
Over the course of his career as a solo performer, Mike Birbiglia has frequently turned back to the same source for inspiration: Martin Moran's acclaimed 2003 solo show, The Tricky Part. With The Tricky Part having recently been revived by the Barrow Group, and Birbiglia making his Broadway debut with The New One, the time was right to sit the pair down to discuss building solo shows, the importance of working with a director like Seth Barrish (who helmed both productions), and the experience of baring your soul onstage while filled with self-doubt. TheaterMania senior features reporter David Gordon serves as moderator.
