Janet McTeer Is a Razor-Sharp Sarah Bernhardt in Theresa Rebeck's New Broadway Play
One of history's greatest actors fences with Shakespeare in Bernhardt/Hamlet.
Roundabout Theatre Company playwright Theresa Rebeck and actor Janet McTeer are bringing one of the most renowned performers of all time back to life on the Broadway stage. In Rebeck's new play, opening September 25 for a limited run at the American Airlines Theatre, McTeer takes on the role of 19th-century actor Sarah Bernhardt. As she prepares to step into the leading part in Shakespeare's Hamlet, Bernhardt and her community "face some deep questions" about what it means to play Hamlet and what it means for a woman to take on the iconic male role.
