Come From Away Makes Tony Dreams Come True for Its Star and Creators

The little Canadian musical that could becomes the toast of Broadway with seven Tony nominations.

Several years ago, the Canadian writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein discovered a story of pure kindness. After the September 11 terrorist attacks, American airspace was restricted. Thirty-eight diverted flights landed in a small Newfoundland town called Gander, causing the population to nearly double overnight. The townspeople sprang into action, welcoming the displaced travelers and making them feel at home.

Sankoff and Hein turned this inspiring tale into the new musical Come From Away, which has been making audiences tear up since it opened on Broadway earlier this spring. Now, it has been nominated for seven Tony Awards. "We all want to be reminded that we're good," says Tony-nominated cast member Jenn Colella when asked why audiences react so strongly to the show. "Because we are."
