About This Show

Set in 1967, Trying tells the story of the internationally known Francis Biddle, Attorney General under President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Chief Judge of the Nuremberg trials. The ailing, ireful yet elegant 81-year-old struggles to come to terms with his age and failing health and soon announces that he has one year left to live. The play opens when his wife has forced upon him a new secretary, Sarah, a sensitive, plain-spoken, 25-year-old newlywed. This richly scripted story illustrates how two strangers, at two dramatically different places in their lives, can unexpectedly and forever influence each other. Trying is inspired by playwright Joanna Glass’s own experience as Biddle’s personal secretary from 1967-1968.
