About this show

Lumina Studio Theatre's Boss John is a brilliant adaptation of Shakespeare's King John by Lumina's artistic director, David Minton. Set in 1850's New York at the infamous Five Points, the play depicts the struggle between families, friends and church, fought among the poorest of the poor during this turbulent time in American history. Who is the rightful heir to the English throne after Richard the Lionhearted is killed? Richard's brother John of the English Boys, backed by his mother Eleanor, fight Arthur, backed by his mother Constance and Philip of the French Boys Gang, to determine who is the true Boss of Gangland Manhattan.

Lumina's Ensemble of 12 teen actors, with talent far beyond their years for having performed in as many as 18 Shakespeare and two Dickens plays -- some having started at age 6 -- bring this extraordinary story and lesser-known masterpiece of Shakespeare to life with stunning costumes designed and created by Wendy Eck, fight choreography, singing, as well as period music performed by acclaimed musicians Tina Chancey and Bruce Hutton on ukulele, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and guitar. Dr. Chancey is a recording artist-musicologist, founding member and director of Hesperus and winner of the Lifetime Achievement award by Early Music America. Mr. Hutton is a multi-instrumentalist and founding member of both Hesperus and the Double Decker String Band. Tina and Bruce have performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.
