About This Show

Inspired by what she believes to be voices from God, Joan of Arc has led her future king to military victory. Now, on trial for her life, she revisits the events that will lead to her being condemned as a heretic — and canonized as a saint. Jean Anouilh’s famous dramatization of Joan’s life and legend is a thought-provoking look at politics, morality and religion, and at how all three can affect world affairs. Written in the wake of World War II, it is shockingly relevant still.

The Lark was first staged in New York at the Longacre Theatre in 1955, with Julie Harris in the title role. The director of the Stratford Festival production, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, is well known for his work on Broadway and in film and television — including the miniseries Brideshead Revisited and the Beatles’ “Let it Be.”
