About This Show

Carla Maxwell, artistic director

Program:
José Limón, The Emperor Jones (1956, major revival and new production); José Limón, Chaconne (1942); Jiri Kylian, La Cathédrale Engloutie (major revival); and Rodrigo Pederneiras, Come With Me (2012) music by Paquito D’Rivera for the dance.

Acclaimed for its dramatic expression, technical mastery and expansive, yet nuanced movement, the Limón Dance Company illustrates the timelessness of José Limón’s work and vision. The State Theatre performance is part of Limón’s 65th Anniversary Celebration. The program will include Come with Me choreographed by Rodrigo Pederneiras from the music score “Ladies in White” by Paquito D’Rivera. This full-company work is a first collaboration between world-renowned Cuban composer/performer Paquito D’Rivera and Rodrigo Pederneiras, the principal choreographer of Grupo Corpo, Brazil’s leading contemporary dance company. Other works to be announced.

Founded in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey, the company is now led by Carla Maxwell, who worked closely with Limón before becoming Artistic Director in 1978. The company’s repertory, which balances classic works with commissions from contemporary choreographers, is of an unparalleled breadth, creating unique experiences for audiences around the world.
