About This Show

Seattle Children’s Theatre presents the world-premiere production of Tibet Through the Red Box. Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly, Flower Drum Song) masterfully adapts the enchanting true story by Peter Sís to surround us with the colors, rhythms and energy of Tibet. Internationally recognized opera and theatre director Francesca Zambello will stage the production.

The play revolves around young Peter and his father, a filmmaker who was sent to China by the Soviet government in Czechoslovakia to help create a documentary about China’s building of a highway into Tibet in the mid-1950s. After getting lost in the snowy mountains, Mr. Sís is found by a mysterious boy who cuts a map out of a giant rhododendron leaf, showing the way through Tibet towards the Buddhist palace, Potala, where the Dalai Lama lives. After three years and many adventures, Sís can begin his journey back home to his son. Peter illustrates the wondrous stories shared with him by his father, transporting us through Tibet and its many riches.

Recommended for ages eight and older.
