About This Show

Questions of faith and its place in our lives permeate The Chosen, the play adapted by Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok from Potok’s now classic novel. And while faith is also divisive in this tale of growing up in different religious traditions in Brooklyn during the 1940s, the bond between friends or between fathers and sons can bridge even that chasm. This story of two fathers and their two teen-age sons unfolds amid a bustling Jewish neighborhood in 1944 Brooklyn. One Hasidic and the other Orthodox, the boys serve as catalysts, and guides, for one another’s transition to manhood. At the center of it all rests not only the uncompromising mystery of being chosen, but also the extraordinary choices we must all make to fill our lives with meaning and follow our distinctly personal paths. Set against the backdrop of WW II, the revelation of the Holocaust, and the desperate struggle of Zionism, The Chosen is ultimately not fundamentally political or religious, but deeply human.
