About This Show

Originally performed as a site specific work in the former Jandorf Disproportional Store in Berlin’s city center in 2003, Back to the Present helped launch Constanza Macras’ reputation as one Europe’s great up-and-coming choreographers. Macras earns her nickname “trash queen” for the cultural detritus — pop songs, music video choreography, reality tv videos and a heavy dose of sex — that she weaves into her zany dance theater works. This engagement in Seattle is part of Dorky Park’s first ever tour of the US, with stops at Dance Theater Workshop (NYC) and the Walker Art Center (MN).

Constanza Macras was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She studied dance in New York at Merce Cunningham Studio and Movement Research before moving to Berlin in 1995. Upon founding her company Dorky Park in 2003, she quickly became one of the leading figures in Germany’s experimental performance scene, touring throughout Europe as well as to Korea, Japan and India.

Part of the New Performance Series.
