About This Show

Each decade since 1949, pundits of every political persuasion have been able to find prophetic moments in George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984. Terms and phrases from the book have become idiomatic in our language. We compare government intrusion into our lives with “Big Brother is watching you.” Confusing political rhetoric is seen as “Newspeak” or “doublethink.” “Room 101” still bespeaks of the place of our greatest fears and “Orwellian” has come to describe actions or organizations reminiscent of the society in the novel. Resident playwright Walter L. Newton has crafted a riveting version of this story in 1984 that will please diehard fans of the book and those theatre goers who are unfamiliar with the story.
