New York City
A gothic musical set in the brutal environs of 1765 London, Sweeney Todd tells the story of the infamous “demon barber of Fleet Street” and his meat pie-making assistant, whose business thrives as their customers disappear. Universally acclaimed upon its Broadway debut in 2005, Director John Doyle’s spare, macabre and thrilling re-imagining features a cast of ten actors who also serve as the show’s orchestra, playing their own instruments onstage.
The show was nominated for best revival of a musical at the 2006 Tony Awards and won Doyle a Tony Award for best director of a musical and won Sarah Travis a Tony Award for best orchestrations. The production also won the Drama League, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for best revival of a musical and was awarded a special citation by the New York Drama Critics Circle.
“One helluva show [that] burrows into your thoughts with the poisoned seductiveness of a campfire storyteller who knows what really scares you.”
