Norm Lewis made history as the first African-American title character in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. He made his Broadway debut in The Who's Tommy and subsequently appeared in Miss Saigon, Side Show, The Wild Party, Amour, Chicago, Les Misérables, The Little Mermaid, and Sondheim on Sondheim. Lewis received Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations for his performance as Porgy in the Broadway production of The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess opposite Audra McDonald, and the Lincoln Center production of Show Boat that was broadcast on PBS.
