Arguably Jane Austen’s finest work, published anonymously in 1816, Emma follows the naive heroine Miss Emma Woodhouse, who with a distinct taste for matchmaking and meddling, attempts to be a puppet master guiding her friends through the pitfalls and surprises of life. Emma, who is handsome, clever, and wealthy, makes it her pet project to marry off her trusting young friend Harriet to the right man. Although Emma’s intentions are good, her choices are disastrous, and she puts Harriet’s happiness in jeopardy as well as her own chances for love.
