New York-based performance group Cedar Lake Ensemble make their San Francisco debut. Artistic Director L. Jen Ballard leads Cedar Lake Ensemble, a new force on the dance scene, which merges classical and contemporary ballet with striking theatrics. The energetic production includes live music, intricate lighting, 3000 lbs. of water and an unforgettable piece, “Pavor Nocturnus,” which features a dancer performing with a bed suspended 20 feet above the stage floor.

Cedar Lake Ensemble’s San Francisco debut tells the story of a goddess who emerges from a pool of water and leads her divine beings to encounter the world of humankind. The audience is taken on every step of the journey from her first movements in water to its conclusion in a mix of physical dance, world music, grand theatrics and vibrant lighting.

The evening’s complete program includes five pieces choreographed by Ballard including “Watchers,” “Drop of Tear I,” “Pavor Nocturnus,” “Neither Here Nor There,” and “Drop of Tear II.” “Pavor Nocturnus” is performed by ensemble member Nikemil Concepcion on a bed that is floating 20 feet in the air, hung by chains. As the bed sways with Concepcion’s movement, his strength and precision amaze the audience. Also on the program are pieces choreographed by Adam Hougland and Todd Williams.
