Beauty and Treasures of Imperial Beijing: Seat of An Empire

Woo Hung (University of Chicago) will survey the rich history of the city of Beijing – its rulers and artists – and consider the legacy of this great city. Michael Knight of the SF Asian Art Museum will explore religious symbolism in painting. A demonstration and performance by Catherine Stevens (University of British Columbia) will illuminate the art of Chinese folk storytelling, and Jeffrey Riegal (UC Berkeley) will conclude the day’s presentations with a look at the transformation of the city from the Ming Dynasty to the present.
