About This Show

Asian American Repertory Theatre (AART) announces the 2005 EXPLORATIONS Staged Reading Series. AART has selected a variety of thought provoking scripts by award winning playwrights to share with the community. Each staged reading will be followed by a discussion in which AART invites audience feedback as it explores potential works for future seasons.

Private Jokes, Public Places by Oren Safdie: A young Korean-American student presents her thesis for a public swimming pool to an all-male jury of famous architects. Directed by Anne Tran.

TUES, MARCH 1 at 7pm
Innocent When You Dream Ken Narasaki: Eighty-year-old Nisei Dan has suffered a catastrophic stroke and his adult children do their best to get to the hospital to pull the plug. In his dreams Dan remembers a girl he met in the 1940’s whom he could never understand. Directed by Alberto Isaac.

Botocan by Thelma Virata De Castro: Inspired by her mother’s memoirs about growing up during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines in World War II, a young woman must choose between serving her family or seeking vengeance for a hidden crime. Directed by Jolene Hui.

SUN., MAY 1 at 7pm
Eyes of the Heart by Catherine Filloux: After witnessing the atrocities collectively known as the “killing fields” in the chaos of Cambodia in the 70’s, a 50-year-old Cambodian woman suffers from psychosomatic blindness as she adjusts to life in the United States. Kimberly Miller directs.
