About this show

The early modern period and, in particular, Shakespeare's plays are a useful mirror of our contemporary religious turmoil. Then as now, there was a fear that secularization would lead to moral decay and a belief that the "other" religion was fundamentally incompatible with the most basic values of society. Of course, in Shakespeare's time, that other religion was Catholicism. This lecture explores what Shakespeare's time and plays can teach us about our own religious fears and prejudices.
