About This Show

As part of its Caryl Churchill Festival, the Wilma celebrates the 25th anniversary of Cloud 9’s U.S. premiere. Hailed as “audacious and savagely funny” by The Washington Post, Cloud 9 is one of Churchill’s most famous plays and remains a surprisingly fresh look at contemporary life, social class, sexuality, marriage, and family. This sexy and bitingly funny play explores the parallels between colonial and sexual oppression. The first act is set in a British colony in Africa at the height of colonialism, while the second act is set in 1970s London, proving that the play’s themes have a continuing relevance in any time period. Stereotypes are probed through gender-bending role reversals as actors at times portray not only the opposite sex but also different ages or races. Blanka Zizka directs.
